Research degrees in Religious StudiesWe welcome suitably qualified graduates to pursue supervised research, for the degree of MA, MPhil or PhD, on any appropriate topic covered by the research and teaching interests of Religious Studies staff.
The options are MA, MPhil or PhDAn MA (Master of Arts) lasts one year full-time or two years part-time. It requires the completion of a dissertation of approximately 30,000-40,000 words. An MPhil (Master of Philosophy) lasts two years full-time or three (or four) years part-time. It requires the completion of a dissertation of approximately 50,000-60,000 words. A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) lasts three years full-time or five (or six) years part-time. It requires the completion of a dissertation of approximately 75,000-100,000 words. These research degrees involve the completion of a dissertation demonstrating one's ability to undertake an original investigation, to test a properly defined hypothesis and to understand the relationship of the topic under investigation to a wider field of knowledge. A PhD dissertation is required, in addition, to be an original contribution to knowledge or understanding within the particular field in question.
